The Engine Check
Most marketing strategies don't fail on paper. They fail in the gap between the plan and the people, budget and decisions needed to deliver it. The Engine Check finds where your marketing is stalling, and why.
-
You know something isn't working. Leads are thin, sales say marketing doesn't help them, or the board wants to know what the budget is buying, and you're the one who has to answer. The cause might be the strategy itself: the wrong problem, the wrong audience, the wrong message. Or the strategy might be sound, and the business isn't set up to deliver it: too few people, no clear owner, nobody measuring the right things. From the inside, the two look the same. So every fix is a guess.
-
A kick-off call, access to your existing materials, and 45 minutes each from up to 6 people. Need more voices included? The number of interviews can be scaled to fit your business, and the price adjusted to match.
The Engine Check tests your marketing against seven areas of what is required for successful strategy execution. It's built on academic research and real-world evidence of what separates strategies that get delivered from strategies that stall. The full literature review is available on request.
-
- Stakeholder interviews: up to 6 conversations with your leadership, sales and marketing people
- A review of your current marketing: website, content, campaigns, sales materials and what you already know about your customers
- The Engine Check report: your marketing assessed against the Arc & Engine framework, showing what's working, what's broken and why
- Prioritised recommendations: what to fix first, what to stop, and what to leave alone
- A 90-minute playback session with your team -
You stop guessing. You'll know whether to fix the strategy, the set-up around it, or both. Your leadership team agrees on one clear diagnosis and a priority list you can act on, with me or without me.
-
Prices start from £5,500. Timing from kick off call to recommendation delivery expected at 5-6 weeks.
Prices depend on scope of project, timings are depending on access to stakeholders.
If you book any other package within three months of an Engine Check, half your Engine Check fee comes off its price.
Drive Map
-
Your sales team describes the customer one way and your website another. Your best customers chose you for reasons nobody has written down. So your marketing talks about the product, not the problem it solves, and you sound like every competitor. When a campaign falls flat, nobody can say why.
-
A kick-off call, introductions to the customers you'd like included, and a half-day workshop. Timing depends partly on how quickly your customers can talk to us.
-
- Customer research with your own customers: 6–8 interviews or a short survey, drawn from your customer list. I design it, run it and analyse it.
- Ideal customer profile: the firms you should be chasing, and the ones you shouldn't
- Persona maps for up to 3 buyers: what they're responsible for, the pressure they're under and how they decide
- A value proposition for each persona, built on the Strategyzer model: their jobs, pains and gains, and how you answer each one
- Reasons to choose you: three to five reasons, with proof, why a customer picks you over the alternative
- Recommendations: how to put it to work in sales conversations, on your website and in campaigns -
Sales, marketing and leadership describe the customer the same way. Your marketing speaks to what your buyer is personally on the hook for, not just what the product does.
-
From £5,950
Timing from kick off to recommendation delivery expected 6–8 weeks.
Benchmark
-
Your competitors claim the same things you do: quality, reliability, expertise, service. Buyers can't tell you apart, so the decision comes down to price, and your margin pays for it. You know you're different, but you can't prove it in one sentence.
-
A kick-off call, the list of competitors you come up against most, and a half-day workshop.
-
- Competitor review: up to 5 competitors, covering their messaging, positioning, products, pricing signals and channels
- Positioning map: where the market is crowded, and where the open ground is
- Market context: the main trends shaping your buyers' decisions, drawn from published sources
- Your positioning statement: where you play and why you win
- Messaging hierarchy: your core message, the supporting messages and the proof behind each one
- Recommendations: where to compete, where not to, and how to say it -
A clear, defensible answer to "why you and not them?", one your sales team can say and your website can show.
-
From £3,950
Timing from kick off call to recommendation delivery expected 4–6 weeks.
Ignition
-
The product is nearly ready and the engineering is solid. But nobody has decided who it's for first, what to say about it or how sales will sell it, and the launch date isn't moving. Launch quietly, and the product is labelled a slow seller before it has had a chance.
-
A product briefing, time with your product and sales leads, and a half-day workshop. Best started at least three months before launch. This package covers the strategy. Copy, design and campaign delivery stay with your team or agency, and I can brief them.
-
- Launch targeting: which segments and buyers to go after first
- A product value proposition for your lead buyers, built on the Strategyzer model
- Launch messaging: headline, key messages and proof points
- Go-to-market plan: channels, sequence and timeline from pre-launch to 90 days after
- Sales enablement brief: what sales needs to know and say, and how to handle objections and competitor questions
- Success measures: what good looks like at 30, 60 and 90 days -
Everyone agrees on the launch before day one. The product is positioned, not just announced, and your sales team is ready to sell it.
-
From £4,950
Timing from kick off call to recommendation delivery is expected at 5–6 weeks*
The Blueprint
-
Marketing happens, but it isn't a plan. Activity follows whatever is urgent: a trade show, a new brochure, a request from sales. There's no agreed view of who you're targeting, what you stand for or what the budget should achieve. So it's hard to defend the spend, or to brief anyone to deliver it.
-
A kick-off call, customer introductions, two half-day workshops and a final sign-off session.
-
Everything in Drive Map and Benchmark, plus:
- Marketing objectives tied to your business goals
- Target segments, in priority order
- Brand positioning and core messaging
- Channel strategy: where to show up, and where not to
- A 12-month marketing plan: priorities by quarter, a budget guide and the resources you'll need
- KPIs and a simple way to measure them
- A handover session with your team, and your agency if you have one -
One strategy document that leadership signs off, your team works from, and anyone you hire can be briefed with.
-
From £12,500
Timing from kick off to final strategy delivery is expected 12–16 weeks.
The Tune-up
-
You've got the recommendations. Now your team has to act on them, alongside everything else, with nobody to test their thinking against.
-
Our analysis demonstrates actionable insights, enabling organizations to optimize resources and align initiatives with measurable objectives.
-
Your team learns The Engine Check framework and how to apply it. The 2-day course adds a worked session on your own marketing, so the team leaves with a first diagnosis as well as the method.
Two 90-minute coaching sessions a month with your marketing lead or team, plus email support between sessions. It works after any package, or on its own for in-house marketers who want to think more strategically.
